Features
The highlight, naturally, is the bipolar design; this entails having drivers firing forward, as in conventional designs, and additional units at the rear. Bipolars disperse sound in a 360-degree pattern, adding that significant bit of oomph for both hi-fi and home theatre adventures.
On the M-890i, a floorstander, the two tweeters are one-inch titanium dome designs, one each placed on the front and rear baffles; similarly, two five-and-a-half-inch, polypropylene-cone woofers take care of the lower frequencies.
These drivers are mounted on a conventional box -- ported at the rear bottom -- and wrapped all around with black cloth to give the impression of some exotic hybrid design. Very clever, because it makes the speaker look elegant.
Bi-wiring facilities are provided but I found the location of the binding posts a mite inconvenient -- way down at the lower edge, on the rear.
Frequency response is 38Hz-22kHz on-axis, the upper end falling off at 20kHz off-axis; usable bass response is 30Hz. Mirage quotes 84dB as the M-890i's sensitivity rating in the anechoic chamber, but this is increased in real-world situations to 88dB. Impedance is six ohms, nominal.
The M-890i is designed to take a beating from the best of amps in the mid-end bracket, and will handle 150 watts RMS with ease. And although Mirage recommends a minimum of 50 watts, I found lower powered (but high current) amps capable of kicking the speaker's butt.
The whole box weighs a tad over 27kg, which isn't too demanding a load to lug around -- provision is also provided to slip the grille cloth off, to access the box in case you need to replace parts.
Sound
Driving the M-890is for most of the time that I had them on was the Krell KAV-300i integrated; for a while, I also used an Anthem Pre 1 and Amp 1 combi being run-in for a future dissertation. Cables used were Tice 416A TPT and van den Hul The First.
Digital sources included Audiolab 8000CDM/8000DAC and Wadia 22/12, strung together with vdH, Tice, Straightwire and Ensemble interconnects. Analogue interludes were courtesy of a Michell Gyrodec/Morch DP-6/vdH MM1.
Initial impressions were of a vividly etched treble, a slightly receded but sweetened midrange and bass that needed some control. As time went by, these impressions were reinforced, but other things surfaced.
Detail retrieval is almost without fault; I say almost because I detected some reticence in this area with more complex music. Mirage recommends toeing in the speakers, but I found the soundstage in this position to be somewhat congested, although bass was noticeably tighter. Allowing the speakers to fire straight ahead brought about a more generously spread stage, better instrument placement and yet, still kept the treble sharply outlined.
That the M-890i works best with simple recordings -- acoustic or electronic -- I have little doubt. Some of the jazz and fusion CDs I tried sounded lively and articulate here, with no emphasis on inherent vocal sibilance. In fact, with such recordings, the M-890i sounded very classy, delivering a spacious and realistic sound that had me riveted to my seat for a considerable time. The midrange falls perfectly in place once the speakers get going, the whole tonal balance sounding very smooth and complete.
To the M-890i's credit, they hardly blinked when driven hard, handling transients with finesse and keeping the lower registers within manageable levels ... provided they weren't overloaded with information. Wattage overkill is fine, though.
Conclusion
Ultimately, if you're the sort with a good collection of baroque, jazz, world and folk recordings, the M-890i is a good long-term proposition -- the more you listen to it, the fonder you'll become of it. In this context, these are speakers that are very easy and extremely enjoyable to be with for hours on end.
The bottom line? Metal maniacs, dance demons and rock rebels need not apply; others, line up and listen, long and carefully, with cheque-books ready.

Verdict
For: Very articulate treble; evocative midrange; tasteful presentation; a good deal of ambience reproduced; best with simple, quality recordings; doesn't falter with transients and high wattage.
Against: Musical scope is limited; bass is very sensitive to partnering ancillaries, room acoustics and speaker positioning; soundstage could be compressed in smaller rooms.
